Has anyone bought warranty cover for a television or a radio etc. Post here and find out how you can save hundreds of pounds.

This post has got me interested and I can't ignore it. I have bought a plasma tv £699 and a warranty for £12.99 per month for three years. Yes I was given the the sales pitch of peace of mind etc so here's my question.

What's wrong with this warranty?

The reason I posted was to generate some debate about what we should type of insurance should we get. Unfortunately, one of my biggest bug bears is warranties. £12.99 a month for three years £467.64 nearly the same price as the plasma tv you bought. But the sales pitch probably never mentioned this.

If we think about it for a minute, are retailers really saying that the products they supply will not last more than a year without problems. Of course not. The Sale of Goods Act ensures that products sold must be of satisfactory quality and fit for the purpose. There are no time limits in the SoGA relating to when we can no longer claim against a faulty product. So after 3 years of normal usage the plasma tv breaks then, I would be beating down the door of the retailer looking for a free repair. If this was not forthcoming, I would consider taking out a small claims action. If this was unsuccessful I would get it repaired, a couple of hundred pounds max. Much better than paying for the warranty.

Anybody with any more thoughts?

George
