Hi there,
I'm 27 years old and I have no idea how much money I owe!!

In 2006 my father died and I decided that I was going to upsticks and move to Australia.
I did this for two years leaving my debts behind me.
I came back to the country in 2008 and have been hiding from them ever since
I have no bank account in my own name (i'm using one opened by my partner), I avoid anything with a credit check involved and generally fly under the radar.
But now I find it's impacting on my life more and more, we#re moving house and I want to help get new furniture and get a car now I've passed my driving test but I'm scared of clicking on anything that I have to give my address and name so that my debts could find me.

I'm scared about Baliffs turning up on my door step, I'm scared for my partner losing stuff or being tarnished because of me. I'm scared of being broke and forced to pay a stupidly high sum of money to my debtors when they find me!
I've tired the CAB and they were useless - they just fobbed me off to the National Debt Helpline, who told me to keep my head down and wait till the debt is SB, but that isn't gonna help!

I need some relevant and helpful advice.
Oh and to sum up my debts - all figures are approx to 2006
£2000 - Virgin Credit Card
£15000 - HSBC Loan
£??? - Orange Phone Bill
£??? - Next Account
£??? - Possible other debtors

Thank You

You can't hide for ever. Come out from your shell, approach those that you owe for possible renegotition of the debt. And try acquiring some financial management intelligence as this will help you manage your finances well that you may not even know when you finish liquidating all your debt.
Goodluck.
Cheers!

It is not a good idea to try and hide forever. As you point out this simply restricts your credit access anyway. Better to "front up" and work with a qualified advisor who will help you deal with the debts properly. If the CAB are as poor as you say, and I think you may have caught someone on a bad day, approach your local authority. They are likely to offer support via a money or debt advisor and it will cost nothing.

Good luck, it may be a long road but worth it in the end.

@Annie Nonymus , good and sound advice. The best way to handle life's challenges is to face them squarely.
